Hollywood Actors Union Gears Up for Strike Vote

18:02 18.07.2023

In a dramatic turn of events, the possibility of a simultaneous strike by Hollywood writers and actors has reached new heights after the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) recommended strike action. This union, which represents a staggering 160,000 actors, made the announcement after labor talks with Hollywood studios failed to produce a satisfactory agreement.

The negotiating committee of SAG-AFTRA voted unanimously to recommend a strike, a move that could have far-reaching consequences for the entertainment industry. The national board of SAG-AFTRA is set to vote on the strike order on Thursday morning, and if approved, it would mark the first dual work stoppage in the industry in over 60 years.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has already been on strike since early May, causing disruptions in late-night television talk shows, production for the fall TV season, and work on big-budget movies. The potential actors' strike would further intensify the situation, forcing U.S.-based productions from Hollywood studios to come to a halt and placing additional pressure on media companies to find a resolution.

Both SAG-AFTRA and the WGA are demanding increases in base pay and residuals in the streaming TV era, as well as guarantees that their work will not be replaced by artificial intelligence (AI). Fran Drescher, former star of The Nanny and the president of SAG-AFTRA, expressed her disappointment with the studios' responses, labeling them as "insulting and disrespectful." She firmly stated that negotiations cannot move forward until the companies engage in good faith.

On the other side of the table, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which negotiates on behalf of major companies like Netflix and Walt Disney, expressed deep disappointment at SAG-AFTRA's decision to walk away from negotiations. The AMPTP claims to have offered "historic pay and residual increases" as well as a groundbreaking AI proposal to protect actors' digital likenesses. They criticized SAG-AFTRA for putting the entire industry and thousands of livelihoods at risk by opting to strike rather than continuing negotiations.

The national board's vote on Thursday will undoubtedly be a pivotal moment, determining whether actors will join the ongoing writers' strike and potentially escalating the labor disputes in the entertainment industry. As tension rises and uncertainty looms, the future of Hollywood hangs in the balance, leaving both industry insiders and fans anxiously awaiting the outcome.
