Bryan Kohberger's Lawyer Claims Idaho Murders Suspect Was on Solo Drive

19:29 04.08.2023

In a recent court filing, the defense team for Bryan Kohberger, the accused killer of four University of Idaho students, has claimed that he was out on a late-night solo drive at the time of the brutal stabbings. The court document, filed by public defender Anne Taylor, provides a glimpse into Kohberger's alibi, stating that he had a habit of going for drives alone, often at night. While he is not claiming to be at a specific location at a specific time, the filing allows for the possibility of corroborating an alibi during trial.

Under Idaho law, defendants are required to notify prosecutors in advance if they plan to present an alibi defense in court. Kohberger's lawyers have stated that they are currently sifting through evidence and searching for potential witnesses who can support their client's whereabouts on the night of the quadruple murder. They also mentioned the possibility of cross-examining the state's witnesses to establish corroboration of Kohberger not being at the scene of the crime.

The four victims, Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin, were brutally stabbed to death inside a rental house near the University of Idaho campus in the early hours of November 13, 2022. Three of the victims lived in the house, while two other young women who were present at the time of the murders were left unharmed. Chapin, who was Kernodle's boyfriend, was also staying at the house and was killed alongside her.

Kohberger, who was pursuing a graduate degree in criminology at Washington State University, is accused of breaking into the coeds' home and carrying out the killings. He was indicted for the murders on May 17 and is scheduled to go to trial this fall. Latah County Prosecutor Bill Thompson has stated his intention to seek the death penalty in this case.

The defense's alibi claim has raised questions among legal experts. Some argue that the defense is attempting to keep the possibility of an alibi open, even though they currently lack specific witnesses. Others believe that the defense is grasping at straws and trying to prejudice the state as much as possible.

Kohberger's attorneys maintain that they have provided all the information they can at this time and are working with the evidence available to them. The court filing suggests that further details regarding potential witnesses and their statements will be provided as the defense team continues to gather information.

As the case progresses, it remains to be seen how the defense's alibi claim will be received in court and whether they will be able to establish corroborating evidence for Kohberger's whereabouts on the night of the murders.
