White House urges end to Biden impeachment inquiry

13:32 15.03.2024

The White House has demanded that House Republicans put an end to their efforts to impeach President Joe Biden, declaring that "enough is enough" after their months-long inquiry failed to produce any evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors. White House counsel Ed Siskel wrote a four-page letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, urging him to move on from the impeachment proceedings, stating that there is too much important work to be done for the American people to continue wasting time on what he called a "charade."

The Republican impeachment drive has all but collapsed following the indictment of a key witness on charges of fabricating allegations against Hunter Biden, the president's son. Some Republicans have expressed doubts about the validity of the impeachment inquiry, and even supporters of impeachment have admitted that they lack the majority needed to proceed with articles of impeachment. Despite this, House Republicans are still investigating and have scheduled a hearing with Hunter Biden's former business associates for the following week.

The White House hopes to capitalize on the disarray within the Republican Party, challenging them to either put up or shut up in regards to the impeachment proceedings. President Biden's advisers want to make it clear to the public that impeachment is effectively dead, as part of a newly aggressive strategy as he enters his re-election campaign. The president aims to get back on the offensive after a period where allies feared he was being too passive, especially as he prepares for a rematch with former President Donald Trump.

While House Republicans are considering criminal referrals to the Justice Department for potential prosecution of individuals involved in the Biden family's business dealings, it remains unclear if any concrete evidence of wrongdoing has been found. Despite their continued efforts, the White House's strong stance against the impeachment inquiry suggests that the proceedings are unlikely to move forward.
