Mother Accused of Urging US Navy Sailor to Spy for China

06:57 10.08.2023

In a shocking development, the prosecution revealed on Tuesday that Jinchao Wei, a US navy sailor accused of providing sensitive military information to China, was encouraged to do so by his own mother. The prosecution alleged that Wei's mother believed that cooperating with a Chinese intelligence officer could potentially help him secure a job with the Chinese government in the future.

Assistant US attorney Fred Sheppard made this accusation during a hearing in federal court in San Diego, where he urged the judge not to release Wei. The 22-year-old sailor was arrested last week on a rarely used espionage charge. He is one of two sailors based in California who are accused of providing classified information to China, including details on military exercises, naval operations, and critical technical material. Both sailors have pleaded not guilty.

According to prosecutors, Wei, who was born in China, was first approached by a Chinese intelligence officer in February 2022 while he was in the process of applying for naturalized US citizenship. Despite being aware that this arrangement could affect his application, Wei admitted to the officer that he was willing to provide detailed information on weapons systems and aircraft aboard US navy vessels.

Furthermore, it was revealed that Wei's mother allegedly played a significant role in encouraging her son to cooperate with the Chinese intelligence officer. She believed that this collaboration could potentially lead to a job with the Chinese government, adding an even more alarming dimension to the case.

Wei's arrest and subsequent charges have shed light on the potential infiltration and espionage activities of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) within the United States. The charges against Wei fall under the Espionage Act, which underscores the severity of the allegations.

It is important to note that Wei's case is not an isolated incident. Another sailor, Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao, also known as Thomas Zhao, has been charged with conspiracy and receipt of a bribe from a Chinese official. Zhao, who held a US security clearance and worked at Naval Base Ventura County, allegedly secretly recorded US military information, photographs, and videos, which he then transmitted to a Chinese intelligence officer posing as a maritime economic researcher in exchange for bribes. The materials shared by Zhao included electrical diagrams and blueprints for a radar system stationed on a US military base.

The arrest of Wei and Zhao highlights the need for stringent measures to safeguard sensitive information and prevent unauthorized access. Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder emphasized that clear policies and procedures are in place to protect such information, and appropriate actions will be taken against those who violate these rules.

As the investigation into these cases continues, the US government is undoubtedly concerned about the potential impact of these breaches on national security. The alleged collaboration between US sailors and Chinese intelligence officers raises questions about the extent of Chinese infiltration within the US military and the measures that need to be taken to counter such threats.

These cases serve as a stark reminder of the ever-present challenge of espionage and the need for constant vigilance to protect national interests and maintain the integrity of sensitive information. The US government and law enforcement agencies will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of military operations and prevent further breaches in the future.
