The brutal attack occurred just days after Christmas, leaving Sophia with severe neurological damage, broken leg bones, and a stab wound through her liver.

According to Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz, the incident occurred around 5:20 a.m. on December 27th. Stephen Giraldo was dropping off their three children, aged 6, 9, and 11, at their mother's home. Surveillance footage captured the horrifying scene as Giraldo pulled up in a white Ford Explorer and instructed the children to buckle up. Little did they know, this simple command was a precursor to an act of unimaginable violence.

As Sophia walked out of her home, Giraldo told the children to "keep your seatbelt(s) on" and abruptly hit the gas pedal. The car jumped the curb, causing it to tilt to one side, but Giraldo's rage had not subsided. In a chilling and calculated move, he crawled over his son, who was seated in the front passenger seat, and climbed out of the vehicle's window. Armed with a knife, he then proceeded to stab his wife.
