Former Capitol Police Officer Harry Dunn Announces Congressional Run in Maryland

10:26 05.01.2024

Former U.S. Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn, known for his brave defense of the Capitol during the violent attack on January 6, 2021, has announced his campaign for Congress in Maryland's 3rd Congressional District. Dunn aims to succeed retiring Rep. John Sarbanes, a Democrat representing the district located west of Baltimore. Having served for 15 years in the Capitol Police force, Dunn left the department in late 2022, concluding his distinguished career.

In a statement announcing his candidacy, Dunn emphasized his commitment to defending democracy, stating, "On January 6th, 2021, I did my duty as a police officer and as an American and defended our nation's Capitol from violent insurrectionists. Today, I'm running for Congress because the forces that spurred that violent attack are still at work, and as a patriotic American, it is my duty to defend our democracy."

Dunn gained national recognition after delivering emotional testimony before the House select committee investigating the January 6 attack. During his testimony, he recounted the harrowing experiences he and other officers endured as they fought to protect the Capitol from a mob of former President Donald Trump's supporters. Dunn shared how he was assaulted and subjected to racial slurs by the rioters. He vividly recalled asking another Black police officer, "Is this America?" as he described the unimaginable events that unfolded that day.

Highlighting the impact of his testimony, Dunn published a memoir in October, shedding light on the trauma he endured following the riot. His bravery and dedication did not go unnoticed, as President Joe Biden awarded Dunn and several other officers the Presidential Citizens Medal on January 6, 2023, exactly two years after the attack.

As a Democrat, Dunn enters a competitive field of candidates vying for Sarbanes' seat. Five Democrats currently serving in the Maryland General Assembly have already announced their campaigns for the position. The third district, which stretches between Washington and Baltimore, heavily leans Democratic, making the primary winner the likely victor in the general election.

Dunn, a native of Prince George's County, Maryland, grew up in the Washington suburbs. He graduated from James Madison University in Virginia, where he excelled in football and played a pivotal role in leading the team to its first national title. Additionally, Dunn has authored a book titled "Standing My Ground," further documenting his remarkable journey.

With his campaign launch, Dunn aims to continue his commitment to public service by representing the people of Maryland's 3rd Congressional District and fighting for the values and principles that define American democracy.
