Oklahoma Investigates Presence of Disgraced Ex-Baylor Coach on Field with Sooners Assistant

21:29 11.09.2023

Disgraced former Baylor football coach Art Briles has once again sparked controversy after being seen on the field with his son-in-law, Jeff Lebby, the offensive coordinator for the University of Oklahoma, following the Sooners' victory over SMU. Briles was fired by Baylor in 2016 after an investigation revealed that he and his coaching staff failed to take action against players accused of sexual assault.

The images of Briles, decked out in Oklahoma gear on Owen Field, quickly circulated on social media, drawing backlash from fans. Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione expressed his disappointment in a statement, stating that he had expected boundaries to be respected and that the situation would be addressed with the appropriate staff.

Lebby, defending his father-in-law's presence on the field, explained that Briles was simply celebrating with his family, as he is the grandfather of Lebby's two children. However, after discussions with Castiglione and head coach Brent Venables, Lebby assured reporters that the situation would not happen again.

The incident has prompted an investigation by the University of Oklahoma, as the school aims to address the concerns raised by fans and ensure that appropriate measures are taken. Coach Venables confirmed that the matter is being dealt with.

This is not the first time Briles has faced controversy in his coaching career. In 2022, he briefly joined Grambling State as the offensive coordinator but left the program after just five days, citing a desire not to be a distraction.

Despite the controversy, the University of Oklahoma currently holds the 19th spot in the AP Top 25 poll and is set to face Tulsa in their upcoming game on Saturday.
