Air Force unveils secretive $700M Raider nuclear stealth bomber

23:34 17.09.2023

The United States Air Force has provided a glimpse into its highly secretive B-21 Raider stealth nuclear bomber, releasing new images of the aircraft on the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) website. Developed by Northrop Grumman, the B-21 Raider is set to replace the current B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit bombers and is expected to enter service by 2027. By 2040, the B-21 is projected to fully replace its predecessors.

The recently unveiled images offer a fresh perspective on the B-21 Raider, showcasing the aircraft from never-before-seen angles. Previously, only a handful of carefully guarded images were released during its December unveiling. However, the newly published photographs provide a closer look at the aircraft's design elements and reveal the scale of this state-of-the-art bomber.

One of the images captures the B-21 Raider from the front, displayed at ground level, offering a detailed view of its size and features. Another photo captures the aircraft at a quartering angle, exposing additional design characteristics that had remained hidden until now.

According to the Pentagon's estimate last year, each B-21 Raider will come with a hefty price tag of approximately $700 million. Despite the steep cost, the Air Force is confident that this next-generation bomber will be the backbone of its fleet, offering advanced capabilities for surviving, long-range, penetrating strikes to deter aggression and safeguard the security of the United States, its allies, and partners.

Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed his enthusiasm for the B-21 Raider, stating, "It's a testament to America's enduring advantages in ingenuity and innovation, and it's proof of the department's long-term commitment to building advanced capabilities that will fortify America's ability to deter aggression, today and into the future."

Following the unveiling, the B-21 Raider is now on track for its first test flight, expected to occur later this year. The anticipation for this event is high, as it will provide an opportunity to assess the performance and capabilities of this highly advanced bomber.

With the B-21 Raider's groundbreaking technology, the United States Air Force aims to maintain its dominance in the realm of air superiority. The transition from the aging B-1 Lancer and B-2 Spirit to the B-21 Raider signifies a significant leap forward in terms of both stealth and strike capabilities. As the Air Force continues to invest in cutting-edge aircraft, the B-21 Raider represents the nation's commitment to innovation and its determination to protect its interests and those of its allies in an ever-evolving global landscape.
