Body of missing Oklahoma mom found wrapped in carpet days after date with mystery man

A tragic incident has left a community in shock as the body of a missing Oklahoma mother, Makayla Meave-Byers, was discovered wrapped in an old carpet in a ditch. The 30-year-old mother of six had been reported missing on September 16 by her husband, Frank Byers. According to an incident report cited by News9, Byers claimed that his wife had gone on a date with someone she met on Facebook as part of their open marriage arrangement.

However, suspicions arose when Meave-Byers' father informed authorities that his daughter had recently asked Byers for a divorce. Law enforcement officials decided to search the missing woman's home in Macomb, separate from her husband's residence, and what they found was unsettling. Broken glass, blood spots on the floor, and blood on the bed sheets were discovered, indicating a violent incident.

Deputies also found two .22-caliber bullet casings, matching a rifle allegedly owned by Byers, who stated that his wife kept it in a cabinet next to his bed. The gun appeared to have been recently fired and had residue on the barrel, according to officials. These findings strongly suggested foul play in Meave-Byers' disappearance.

Tragically, the woman's body was found on Wednesday of last week in a culvert, submerged nearly 4 feet deep, near a creek and a few miles from her house. Pottawatomie County Undersheriff Travis Dinwiddie confirmed that the body was wrapped in waterlogged "old pieces of carpet," further solidifying suspicions of foul play.

In the aftermath of the discovery, Frank Byers, who had initially pleaded for help in finding his wife, has retained a lawyer and is cooperating with the investigation. However, he has been met with an outpouring of "pure hatred" from the community, with mourners even blocking his view at a vigil held for his wife. Byers' friend, Anne Gonzales, spoke out in his defense, stating that he loved and still loves Meave-Byers and that his side of the family also seeks justice.

The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made thus far. The Pottawatomie County Sheriff's Office had previously stated that Meave-Byers was last seen voluntarily getting into a Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a tall, balding man with a dark beard and sunglasses. However, authorities have not provided any updates on the search for this individual.

As the community mourns the loss of a beloved teacher's assistant and devoted mother, they are left searching for answers and seeking justice in what appears to be a heartbreaking case of violence and betrayal.
