Buck Showalter departs as Mets manager after two-year tenure

16:39 01.10.2023

In a surprising turn of events, the New York Mets find themselves in need of a new manager once again. Buck Showalter, who took over as manager ahead of the 2022 season, announced on Sunday that he will not be returning next year. This announcement comes just under a month after the Mets hired David Stearns as their new president of baseball operations, signaling a shift in the team's leadership.

Showalter expressed his gratitude towards the Mets organization and their fans, saying, "I was honored to get a chance to manage a second New York team and I'm proud of what the Mets did... I wish things could've gone better this season because Mets fans deserve that." It is clear that the disappointment of the 2023 season weighed heavily on Showalter, who led the Mets to a successful 101-win season and a postseason berth in his first year as manager. However, this season was marred by underperformance, as the Mets entered Sunday's game against the Phillies with a disappointing 74-86 record and had long been eliminated from playoff contention.

Owner Steve Cohen acknowledged the need for change in his statement, saying, "We are heading in a new direction, with a new president of baseball operations and we let Buck know we'll be parting ways." Cohen also praised Showalter's contributions to the team, recognizing him as a "generational manager" and expressing gratitude for leading the Mets to a successful season in 2022. Cohen emphasized that the commitment and heart Showalter brought to the game will be felt by the organization for years to come.

The timing of Showalter's departure adds an extra layer of intrigue, as it comes after a tumultuous season for the Mets. Despite high expectations fueled by the offseason signings of Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer, the team's performance fell short, resulting in the trades of both star pitchers. The Mets' disappointing run ultimately led to a 74-86 record as they head into their final game against the Phillies.

Showalter, a four-time Manager of the Year, has an impressive managerial career spanning over 22 years. Throughout his tenure, he has guided the Baltimore Orioles, Texas Rangers, Arizona Diamondbacks, and New York Yankees. Showalter leaves the Mets with a record of 1,726-1,664.

With Showalter's departure, the Mets will now begin their search for a new manager immediately. It remains to be seen who will fill this pivotal role and lead the Mets into the 2024 season. As the Mets continue to undergo significant changes in their front office and coaching staff, fans eagerly await the next chapter for their beloved team.
