'Boopac Shakur' fatally shot at restaurant after outing online pedophiles

20:54 03.10.2023

The fatal shooting of a Michigan man, Robert Wayne Lee, who was known for his efforts to catch alleged pedophiles online, is now believed to be unrelated to a confrontation he had with someone he had accused. Initially, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office stated that Lee was shot and killed after accusing a man at a restaurant of being a pedophile. However, on Tuesday, the sheriff clarified that there was no corroborative information to support that claim.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard explained that when they responded to the call, the community inferred that Lee might have been there to confront a pedophile. However, as the investigation progressed, they found no evidence to support that assumption. It is important to note that investigations are dynamic, and information can change as cases progress, said a sheriff's office spokesperson.

Lee, who also went by the name "Boopac Shakur," was shot and killed on Friday night at a restaurant in Pontiac, Michigan. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the shooting. According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen D. McDonald, there is no evidence to suggest that the September 29th confrontation was a planned meeting or part of any sting operation. No charges have been authorized yet.

The alleged shooter is a 16-year-old boy, and the second individual arrested is an 18-year-old man, according to McDonald's office. The sheriff's office had previously stated that Lee accused one man at the restaurant of being a pedophile and punched him, which led the man to pull out a knife. Another man then produced a firearm and shot Lee several times. Lee was hospitalized but succumbed to his injuries.

The sheriff's office described Lee as a "one-man crusade" who would pose as an underage girl online. His efforts had led to arrests and criminal charges against several men. However, he had also mistakenly identified individuals as pedophiles. Both the sheriff's and prosecutor's offices expressed concerns that confronting people with such allegations could incite violence.

Prosecutor McDonald further highlighted concerns about Lee's tactics, which often interfered with law enforcement's ability to conduct investigations and gather evidence. In some cases, individuals identified by Lee could not be charged with crimes, or cases against them were dismissed. He had even been investigated and charged with crimes for destroying property of individuals who were not the targets of his sting operations.

Robert Wayne Lee, a Michigan man known for his efforts to catch pedophiles using social media, was fatally shot on the weekend during a dispute with a person he had accused. Lee, also known as "Boopac Shakur," had a significant following on Instagram and Facebook, boasting over 60,000 combined followers. He would pose as a 15-year-old girl online to attract potential predators and then expose them to authorities.

The incident occurred at a restaurant in Pontiac, where Lee confronted two individuals, accusing one of them, an 18-year-old male, of being a pedophile. The exact veracity of his allegation remains unclear. According to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office, the confrontation rapidly escalated, leading to one of the suspects firing a pistol. Lee was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.

On Saturday afternoon, two suspects, a 17-year-old alleged shooter and an 18-year-old individual, were arrested in connection with the shooting. Both suspects are believed to be from Pontiac. The case is currently under investigation, and the sheriff's office expects to present charges to the prosecutors soon.

Sheriff Michael Bouchard acknowledged Lee's efforts in bringing several men to justice through arrests and criminal charges. However, he also emphasized that Lee had mistakenly identified someone as a sexual predator who was not. Bouchard expressed concern regarding individuals who engage in such activities, as they often underestimate the potential for violence when confronting alleged predators. He cited instances where suspected predators have exhibited violent behavior, attempting to escape arrest.

It is essential to note that while Lee's intentions to hold child predators accountable were commendable, law enforcement and the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office did not sanction or encourage his conduct. They were concerned about the potential for violence or injury resulting from confrontations initiated by individuals like Lee. Furthermore, Lee's tactics often interfered with law enforcement's ability to conduct proper investigations and gather evidence, leading to cases being dismissed or charges not being filed against individuals he had identified.
