Oscar Pistorius released on parole after 9-year sentence for girlfriend's murder

21:10 05.01.2024

Oscar Pistorius, the disgraced double-amputee Olympian who infamously murdered his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in 2013, has been released on parole from Atteridgeville Prison in Pretoria, South Africa. The news of his release has sparked controversy and reignited the painful memories of the tragic incident that shook the nation.

The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) confirmed Pistorius' parole, stating that he was officially released on January 5, 2024. The department also revealed that he had been admitted into the system of Community Corrections and was now at home. The exact location of his residence was not disclosed, but it is widely believed that he will be staying at his uncle's lavish three-story mansion.

Pistorius' uncle's mansion, where he will serve the remainder of his parole, is said to be heavily fortified with armed guards, electronic security systems, and attack dogs. This level of security is unsurprising given the high-profile nature of the case and the public outrage it has generated.

The former Paralympic runner had been serving a 13-year and five-month sentence for the murder of Reeva Steenkamp. On Valentine's Day in 2013, Pistorius shot Steenkamp four times through a bathroom door, claiming that he mistook her for a burglar. During his murder trial, Pistorius argued that he used ammunition designed to cause maximum harm to intruders. However, the court found him guilty of murder, a more serious charge, in late 2015.

Pistorius' sentence has been a subject of contention since the beginning of the trial. Initially sentenced to five years in jail for culpable homicide in 2014, his punishment was increased to six years by the South African Supreme Court of Appeal in 2016. Prosecutors appealed once again in 2017, arguing that the sentence was too lenient, resulting in Pistorius' jail time being more than doubled.

Last November, Pistorius was granted parole after a failed attempt earlier in the year. He will now complete the remainder of his sentence under the supervision of the community corrections system. While Pistorius may have regained his freedom, the pain and loss suffered by Reeva Steenkamp's family remains ever-present.

June Steenkamp, Reeva's mother, expressed her ongoing belief that Pistorius intentionally took her daughter's life. In a statement released by the family's lawyer, she stated, "The day South Africa lost its hero, Oscar Pistorius, and the day Barry and I lost our precious daughter, Reeva, at Oscar's hands." Her words serve as a reminder that the wounds inflicted by this tragic event are far from healed.

As Oscar Pistorius quietly slips back into society, the South African public and the world at large are left to grapple with the complexities of justice, forgiveness, and the enduring impact of his actions.
