Trump moves to "temporarily" dismiss $500 million lawsuit against Michael Cohen

01:45 06.10.2023

Former President Donald Trump has voluntarily dismissed his $500 million lawsuit against his former attorney, Michael Cohen, with plans to refile the suit at a later date. The lawsuit, which was filed in April, accused Cohen of breaching their attorney-client relationship and engaging in unjust enrichment. Trump's attorneys filed a motion to dismiss the case without prejudice, citing the president's busy schedule and ongoing legal battles as the reason for the dismissal. A spokesperson for Trump stated that the lawsuit will be refiled once he has prevailed against the investigations and "witch hunts" targeting him. The spokesperson also mentioned that Cohen will be held accountable for his actions and referred to him as a proud felon. The initial lawsuit alleged that Cohen spread falsehoods about Trump with malicious intent, ignoring cease and desist orders. Cohen, who pleaded guilty to several federal charges in 2018, including arranging hush money payments to Stormy Daniels and Karen McDougal, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The dismissal of the lawsuit comes as Trump faces multiple indictments and a civil fraud trial. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him. The trial related to hush money payments made during the 2016 presidential campaign is set to begin in March 2024, while the trial for alleged improper retention of classified records and obstruction of justice is scheduled for May 2024. In addition, Trump has been indicted on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy against rights. The trial for these charges is expected to start in March 2024. Trump has also been charged in a separate investigation in Fulton County, Georgia, with counts of violation of the Georgia RICO Act, criminal solicitation, criminal conspiracy, filing false documents, and making false statements. The dismissal of the lawsuit against Cohen allows Trump to focus on his legal battles and his potential 2024 presidential campaign.
