Liberty owner Joe Tsai gets last laugh after ESPN star criticizes team's fan base

In a fiery exchange between sports personalities, New York Liberty and Brooklyn Nets owner Joe Tsai found himself at odds with ESPN's Michael Wilbon. The war of words began on Friday's episode of "Pardon the Interruption" when Wilbon was asked to predict the winner of Game 3 of the WNBA Finals.

Wilbon took the opportunity to criticize the poor acoustics for crowd noise at the Barclays Center, stating, "You need a rabid, Phillies-like crowd in Brooklyn. Oh, wait. They're barely awake in Brooklyn. It is the worst homecourt advantage, homecourt situation in terms of spirit in the entire NBA - all 30 teams (maybe Washington) - and the entire WNBA - all whatever it is, 12 teams?" He further expressed his disappointment in the lack of enthusiasm and energy in the arena, comparing it to a "library." Wilbon concluded his rant with a sarcastic jab at the Barclays Center, saying, "you hipsters better get a real arena because you stink right now."

After the New York Liberty's convincing victory in Game 3 on Sunday, a fan took to social media to mockingly reference Wilbon's comments about the team's lack of home court advantage. The tweet featured a video showcasing a raucous crowd, which caught the attention of Joe Tsai.

Tsai, not one to let things slide, shared the tweet and invited Wilbon to attend his first WNBA game at the Barclays Center on Wednesday. "We'd like to invite @RealMikeWilbon to his first WNBA game on Wednesday at Barclays Center," Tsai said in the re-share.

Wilbon, undeterred, stood by his initial criticism and clarified that he was specifically targeting the arena and not the team's fans. During Monday's episode of "PTI," he addressed Tsai directly, stating, "Let's be clear about something: I didn't criticize your league or your fan base or even your team. I criticized your building, which is awful. Dark, quiet, and awful."

In response to Tony Kornheiser's question about whether Wilbon considered the Barclays Center a "dump," Wilbon clarified, "No, it's dark and it's quiet and it's not Vegas. It's not one of the top places you go to get fired up and amped up for your team."

Despite the ongoing feud between Wilbon and Tsai, the focus remains on the WNBA Finals. The Las Vegas Aces currently hold a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five series, with Game 4 scheduled for Wednesday at the Barclays Center.

While the Liberty may have faced criticism for their perceived lack of home court advantage, they responded with a resounding win in Game 3. Led by Jonquel Jones, who recorded 27 points and eight rebounds, and Breanna Stewart, who contributed 20 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists, the Liberty fought off elimination with an 87-73 victory.

Notably, the game also saw a record-breaking attendance, with 17,143 fans filling the Barclays Center. This achievement serves as a testament to the passion and support of the Liberty's dedicated fan base.

Ultimately, regardless of the ongoing verbal sparring between Joe Tsai and Michael Wilbon, the focus remains on the WNBA Finals and the upcoming Game 4, where the Liberty will seek to even the series and keep their championship hopes alive.
