Conflicting Witness Accounts Complicate Investigation into Jewish Man's Death at Competing Protests in California

In a tragic incident that unfolded during competing street corner rallies in Thousand Oaks, California, conflicting witness accounts have complicated the investigation into the death of Jewish man Paul Kessler. The 69-year-old sustained fatal injuries after hitting his head on the pavement during an altercation with a pro-Palestinian counter-protester on Sunday.

Authorities have identified and searched the home of the unnamed suspect, a 50-year-old resident of Moorpark associated with the "Freedom for Palestine" group. However, no arrests have been made yet as investigators grapple with piecing together the events that led to Kessler's fall.

Initial witness footage reviewed by Fox News Digital revealed that Kessler was bloodied but alert and speaking at the scene. However, he later succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Los Robles hospital. An autopsy conducted by Chief Medical Examiner Christopher Young determined the cause of death to be blunt force head trauma, leading to the classification of homicide. It is important to note that the manner of death is not a medical legal determination, according to Young.

The autopsy revealed non-lethal injuries on the left side of Kessler's face, as well as skull fractures, brain swelling, and bruising internally. Ventura County Sheriff James Fryhoff acknowledged that there was clearly an interaction between Kessler and the suspect but emphasized that the level of interaction remains unclear.

Investigators are considering the possibility of a hate crime in Kessler's death. While they have obtained ample footage capturing the moments preceding and following the altercation, they are urging the public to come forward with any footage that captures the moment blows were thrown. Fryhoff stressed the importance of determining whether a blow to the face caused Kessler's fall or if he fell without a precipitating event.

The conflicting witness accounts at the scene have further complicated the investigation. Fryhoff revealed that witnesses from both the pro-Palestine and pro-Israel camps disagreed on who initiated the incident. Some witnesses claimed that the suspect swung a megaphone at Kessler, who was holding an Israeli flag, while others are unsure if the megaphone actually made contact.

Detectives obtained a search warrant for the suspect's residence and pulled him over in Simi Valley. He was detained while law enforcement searched his home and vehicle, but the police did not disclose any findings or comment on the suspect's prior criminal record. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office also declined to comment on the probable cause affidavit for the warrant.

Fryhoff highlighted the need for a thorough investigation to gather all the evidence necessary for potential prosecution. He noted that while the suspect is currently the only known individual involved in an interaction with Kessler, it does not exclude the possibility of others being implicated.

The incident occurred against the backdrop of ongoing protests in Ventura County since Hamas invaded Israel on October 7. The rallies drew around 100 participants, and law enforcement had been intermittently surveilling the area due to indications from social media posts that the event would be peaceful.

As the investigation continues, a memorial has been set up outside the Shell gas station in Westlake where Kessler sustained his fatal injury. The community mourns the loss of a father-of-two amid the ongoing tensions surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
