Houthis Shoot Down US MQ-9 Drone off Yemen's Coast

00:44 09.11.2023

In a recent development, a U.S. MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down off the coast of Yemen, according to a senior U.S. defense official. The drone was reportedly conducting surveillance over Yemen when it was targeted by Iranian-backed Houthi forces. The official confirmed that the attack occurred in international airspace over international waters off the coast of Yemen. U.S. Central Command officials are currently assessing the incident.

Video footage released by the Houthis shows the moment the drone was shot down, with U.S. defense officials suggesting that the SA-6 surface-to-air missile was likely used in the attack. Notably, this is not the first time a drone of this type has been shot down by the Houthi militia, with the last incident occurring on June 6, 2019.

MQ-9 Reaper drones are primarily used for intelligence collection, but they also have the capacity to carry up to eight laser-guided Hellfire missiles, making them a formidable weapon. Equipped with advanced cameras, sensors, and radars, these drones can detect heat and operate in low-light conditions. They have a long endurance of over 27 hours and are capable of flying at altitudes exceeding 25,000 feet.

With a wingspan of 66 feet, a length of 36 feet, a height of 12.5 feet, and weighing 4,900 pounds empty, the MQ-9 Reaper drone can reach a maximum speed of 276 miles per hour and has a range of 1,150 miles.

The context surrounding this incident highlights the escalating tensions in the region. The Houthi militia, backed by Iran, has been engaged in a devastating civil war against the internationally recognized government of Yemen since 2014. The recent attacks by the Houthis against Israel, including missile and drone strikes, have further exacerbated the situation.

It is worth noting that the Biden administration removed the Houthis from the U.S. list of terrorist groups in 2021, a decision that has drawn criticism from some quarters. The incident involving the downed drone adds another layer of complexity to an already volatile situation, potentially raising concerns about the potential for further escalation in the conflict.

As Central Command officials continue to assess the situation, it remains to be seen how this incident will impact the ongoing dynamics in the region and the broader implications for U.S. involvement. The loss of a $30 million MQ-9 Reaper drone highlights the strategic and financial consequences of such attacks, underscoring the need for heightened vigilance and security measures in the face of evolving threats.
