Republican Marjorie Taylor Greene moves to impeach US Homeland Security secretary

17:28 09.11.2023

In a bold move, Republican congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene has initiated a vote to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, citing his alleged failure to secure the US-Mexico border. Greene, a staunch Republican, has accused Mayorkas of breaking his oath of office, while the Department of Homeland Security has dismissed these claims as baseless.

The impeachment motion, however, faces an uphill battle, as it is unlikely to succeed. Despite the unlikelihood of success, Greene remains steadfast in her pursuit and stated that her decision was motivated by the deaths of two Americans in her district, who were killed by human smugglers. Expressing her concern, she emphasized that this issue extends beyond the southern border and impacts the entire country.

According to House rules, the Republican-controlled chamber will have two working days to vote on the motion, but procedural delays may alter this timeline. Even if the motion manages to pass the House, it is expected to be defeated in the Democrat-controlled Senate, where a two-thirds majority would be required to remove Mayorkas from office.

Greene's call for impeachment aligns with the sentiments of other far-right Republicans, who have repeatedly sought the impeachment of President Joe Biden and his top officials over border-related concerns among other issues. In response, the Department of Homeland Security released a statement accusing Congressional Republicans of wasting time and energy on "baseless attacks" instead of collaborating to enhance national security and address the broken immigration system.

The urgency of Greene's motion stems from the alarming statistics regarding border apprehensions. In both the 2022 and 2023 fiscal years, the number of people apprehended at the US-Mexico border exceeded two million. Notably, in September 2023 alone, authorities apprehended over 200,000 migrants attempting to cross the border, according to figures from the Department of Homeland Security.
