Saints' Michael Thomas arrested in confrontation with construction worker

16:08 11.11.2023

New Orleans Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas found himself in legal trouble on Friday night after an altercation with a construction worker in his neighborhood led to his arrest on misdemeanor charges. According to the Kenner Police Department, Thomas was taken into custody following a statement from the victim, who claimed that the football star confronted him about parking in front of his house and proceeded to hurl verbal threats at him.

The incident escalated when Thomas allegedly picked up a brick and threw it at the windshield of the worker's truck. Fortunately, the damage caused by the projectile was minimal, as confirmed by law enforcement officials. The situation further deteriorated when the construction worker began filming the altercation, provoking Thomas to dash towards him and forcibly knock the phone out of his hand. Witnesses reported that Thomas was adamant about not being recorded during the incident.

Thomas was arrested without any resistance and subsequently charged with Simple Battery and Criminal Mischief. He was later released at approximately 10:00 p.m. Once news of the incident broke, the New Orleans Saints issued a statement to Fox News Digital, acknowledging their awareness of the situation and their ongoing efforts to gather relevant information.

Speaking to WDSU 6 News, the construction worker recounted the events that unfolded during the altercation, stating, "He drives up, and I see him get out, and I was like, I don't know what he's doing. I'm just worried about my job site, and he walks up to this big pile of sand and grabs a brick, and he throws it at my car. And the guys are like, 'Hey man, your truck, your truck!' Oh, dude, he's actually doing something." The worker then resorted to recording Thomas's actions on his phone, which instantly drew the football player's attention, leading to the physical confrontation.

Michael Thomas, an integral part of the New Orleans Saints for the past eight NFL seasons, has established himself as a prominent wide receiver. He secured First-Team All-Pro honors in both 2018 and 2019, amassing over 1,400 receiving yards and scoring 18 touchdowns across these two standout seasons. However, Thomas has struggled with injuries in recent years, missing the entire 2021 season due to an ankle injury. In the nine games he has played this year, Thomas has recorded 38 catches for 439 yards and one touchdown.

In light of his arrest, it remains unclear whether Thomas has retained legal representation to address the charges against him. Meanwhile, sources indicate that the Saints organization is closely monitoring the situation, but no public statements have been made regarding Thomas's availability for the team's upcoming game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Despite this off-field incident, Thomas is expected to travel with the team and play in Sunday's game, according to an anonymous source familiar with the situation. The Saints' statement emphasized their awareness of the incident and their active pursuit of additional information. As the legal proceedings unfold, Thomas's future with the team may be subject to further evaluation and potential consequences. Nonetheless, his performance on the field has been notable, with his presence greatly contributing to the Saints' offense this season.
