FBI intensifies campaign investigation, seizes Eric Adams's phones

07:55 13.11.2023

An investigation into the fund-raising practices of New York City Mayor Eric Adams's 2021 campaign has taken a dramatic turn as federal authorities raided the home of his chief fund-raiser, Brianna Suggs, on November 2nd. The investigation, led by federal prosecutors and the FBI, is examining whether Adams's campaign conspired with the Turkish government, including its consulate in New York, to receive illegal donations. The search warrant obtained by The New York Times revealed that investigators are also looking into the role of a Brooklyn building company, KSK Construction, owned by Turkish immigrants, which organized a fund-raising event for Adams in May 2021.

Brianna Suggs, who is now 25 years old, was an inexperienced 23-year-old former intern when she was tapped to run Adams's fund-raising operation for his successful 2021 mayoral bid. She has a close relationship with both Adams and his top aide, Ingrid Lewis-Martin, and has been described as smart and easy to work with. However, Suggs is now embroiled in the federal investigation. During the raid at her home, federal agents seized electronic devices, including two laptop computers, three iPhones, and a folder labeled "Eric Adams."

Mayor Eric Adams himself has been directly involved in the investigation. Federal agents approached him after an event in Manhattan, asked his security detail to step aside, and got into his SUV with him. They seized at least two cellphones and an iPad, but the devices were returned to the mayor within days. Adams's lawyer stated that the mayor is cooperating with federal authorities and had already reported at least one instance of improper behavior. Adams has not been accused of wrongdoing and has stated that he has nothing to hide.

The investigation also involves an episode between Adams and the newly built Turkish consulate building in New York. After winning the Democratic nomination for mayor in the summer of 2021, Adams contacted the then-Fire Commissioner to relay the Turkish government's desire to use the building temporarily, despite fire safety issues that had not been resolved. The city ultimately issued a temporary certificate of occupancy, allowing the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to preside over the grand opening of the building in September 2021. The building's fire safety system had numerous flaws, but the intervention by Adams paved the way for the opening.

The seizure of Mayor Adams's electronic devices marks a significant development in the investigation, as it appears to be the first direct instance of the campaign contribution probe touching the mayor himself. Adams has expressed confidence in his innocence and has emphasized his commitment to following the law. Spokesmen for the FBI and the attorney's office for the Southern District of New York have declined to comment on the investigation.

This investigation adds to a series of legal issues that have surrounded Adams and those in his orbit. Eric Ulrich, Adams's former buildings commissioner and senior adviser, was indicted in September on multiple felony charges. In July, six individuals, including a retired police inspector who previously worked with Adams, were indicted on charges of conspiring to funnel illegal donations to the mayor's 2021 campaign. Additionally, the city's Department of Investigation is investigating one of Adams's closest advisers, Timothy Pearson, in connection with a violent altercation at a migrant center in Manhattan. Adams himself has faced scrutiny in the past for organizing a fundraising event for a nonprofit before it was registered with the state.

As the investigation into Adams's fund-raising practices continues, both the mayor's personal and public reputation are at stake. Adams, who has already raised more than $2.5 million for his re-election bid in 2025, is facing intense challenges, including a migrant crisis and the city's struggle to recover from the pandemic. The investigation presents a significant challenge for the mayor, who must navigate the ongoing legal scrutiny while addressing the pressing issues facing New York City.
