National media company rescues local newspaper in Connecticut

18:24 22.11.2023

In a surprising turn of events, a small Connecticut newspaper, the Winsted Citizen, has been rescued from a certain shutdown by American Business Media. The national media company made an offer to acquire the struggling newspaper after its chief executive, Vincent Valvo, learned of its impending demise. Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

The Winsted Citizen, which began publishing in February with the backing of consumer advocate Ralph Nader, had been facing significant financial troubles. Its oversight board had recently decided that it could no longer continue operating. However, American Business Media stepped in just two days later to save the day.

Vincent Valvo, who is not only the chief executive but also the publisher and editor in chief of American Business Media, expressed his desire to see the newspaper succeed. With his extensive experience in the media industry, having worked at the Hartford Business Journal and Connecticut Law Tribune, as well as leading the Connecticut Council on Freedom of Information, Valvo has a deep understanding of the region and its needs.

"I look at it and I think I know what folks in this region would like to see and what I"d like to see," Valvo said. "I have an infrastructure that can serve this, and I'm like let's do it."

American Business Media, which publishes seven national business magazines and organizes business conferences and trade shows, now adds the Winsted Citizen to its portfolio. The company plans to expand the newspaper's online and social media presence, envisioning a successful future for the publication.

Ralph Nader, who grew up in Winsted, had invested $15,000 to help start the Citizen with the hope of defying the trend of media closures and downsizing. However, the newspaper quickly found itself facing insurmountable budget deficits. Andy Thibault, the former editor and publisher of the paper, revealed that Valvo has decided to keep him on as a contributing editor. Valvo further assured that there would be no layoffs at the Citizen.

This acquisition marks a potentially positive turning point for the Winsted Citizen, which had been publishing monthly in broadsheet form. With the support and resources of American Business Media, the newspaper now has a chance to thrive and continue serving the community.
