Ex-Honduras President Convicted in US Drug Trafficking Trial

17:44 08.03.2024

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was convicted in New York on Friday of charges that he conspired with drug traffickers and used his military and national police force to enable tons of cocaine to make it unhindered into the United States. The jury returned its verdict at a federal court after a two-week trial, which has been closely followed in his home country. The charges carry a mandatory minimum of 40 years in prison and a potential maximum of life, with sentencing set for June 26.

Hernandez, who served two terms as the leader of Honduras, patted his defense attorney on the back as the verdict was read in the courtroom. Outside the courthouse, nearly 100 opponents of Hernandez celebrated the outcome with applause and jumping into the air. The scene in the courtroom was subdued, with Hernandez appearing relaxed as the verdict was announced on three counts.

In remarks to the jury, Judge P. Kevin Castel praised them for reaching a unanimous verdict, emphasizing the importance of their decision. Defense attorney Sabrina Shroff stated that Hernandez will appeal the conviction, while U.S. Attorney Damian Williams expressed hope that the conviction sends a message to corrupt politicians.

Hernandez, who was arrested at his home in Tegucigalpa three months after leaving office in 2022, was accused of working with drug traffickers as far back as 2004. He denied accepting bribes himself but acknowledged that drug money was paid to political parties in Honduras. Witnesses in the trial included traffickers who admitted to murders and said Hernandez protected powerful cocaine dealers.

During his presidency, Hernandez portrayed himself as a law-and-order candidate, but prosecutors in the U.S. alleged that he was allied with drug traffickers. Witnesses testified that his political success was fueled by drug proceeds, including from El Chapo. Hernandez allowed vast amounts of cocaine to pass through Honduras on its way to the United States.

The conviction of Hernandez marks a significant moment in the fight against corruption and drug trafficking in Honduras, sending a strong message to those who would abuse their power for personal gain.
