Body of experienced hiker found at California waterfall

15:42 25.03.2024

A tragic end to a four-day search for Caroline Meister, a 30-year-old hiker who was found dead at the base of a waterfall in Carmel Valley, California. Meister, described as an experienced and avid hiker, set off for a solo day hike on March 18 from the Tassajara Zen Mountain Center where she lived and worked. When she failed to return, staff members at the center contacted authorities, and a massive search effort involving helicopters, ground crews, drones, and K9 units was launched.

After days of searching, Meister's body was discovered at the base of a waterfall near the "Cut Off Trail" in the Ventana Wilderness. Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto stated that based on physical evidence, foul play is not suspected, and Meister's injuries were consistent with a fall down a cliff. A forensic examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of her death.

Meister's parents expressed their gratitude to all those involved in the search and described their daughter as a lovely and gentle spirit. Heather Iarusso, director of the Zen Center, emphasized that hiking alone in the area was not uncommon among residents who were familiar with the trails. The San Francisco Zen Center, where Meister had connections, expressed deep sadness and support for those affected by her passing.

The community is mourning the loss of Caroline Meister, a bright and kind soul whose love for hiking ultimately led to her tragic death.
