Victims of Niagara Falls crash identified as husband and wife from western New York

22:49 24.11.2023

The tragic incident that occurred on Wednesday at the U.S.-Canada border, resulting in a deadly explosion, has now been identified as a married couple from Grand Island, New York. The victims were identified as 53-year-old Monica and Kurt P Villani, who crashed their luxury car while driving down Rainbow Bridge, the main crossing point between the two countries in Niagara Falls.

Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the couple's 2022 Bentley Flying Spur went airborne after colliding with a cement median. The vehicle then burst into flames upon impact with a border crossing booth, causing a fiery explosion. The intensity of the explosion left only the engine and charred debris, leaving little evidence of the luxury car's existence.

Niagara Falls Police Chief John Faso addressed the media, stating that the investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the crash. Chief Faso mentioned that medical or mechanical issues are being considered as contributing factors. The authorities are meticulously examining the wreckage to gather all possible evidence.

The couple's identities were released on Friday after the families were informed. The Villani family, well-known for owning the lumber business Gui's Lumber and seven Ace Hardware locations in Western New York, expressed their gratitude for the prayers, condolences, and well wishes received. In a joint statement released by the Erie County Sheriff's Office, they requested privacy to begin the healing process.

The incident caused significant concern on both sides of the border, leading to the temporary closure of Rainbow Bridge and three other nearby crossings. Fears of a terror attack were quickly dispelled by the FBI's Buffalo office, which found no indications of suspicious activity. The case has since been handed over to local police as a traffic investigation.

Local community members remember the couple for their significant contributions to their community. The President of the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce, Eric Fiebelkorn, praised their support, stating they were known for their generosity and dedication to the well-being of others. The Villanis continued a tradition started by Kurt's parents, donating 250 turkeys every year to a local food drive. The couple's involvement in philanthropy endeared them to many, leaving a void in the community with these sudden losses.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the incident as surreal and expressed her shock at the intensity of the explosion. The Governor, speaking at a news conference, compared the devastation to something out of a movie, highlighting how high the vehicle went into the air before crashing and exploding.

Rainbow Bridge is a heavily trafficked border crossing, with approximately 6,000 vehicles passing through it daily. The short steel bridge offers picturesque views of Niagara Falls, attracting tourists from around the world. The closure of the bridge disrupted cross-border travel until the following day.

As the investigation into this tragic event continues, authorities are determined to uncover the truth behind the crash. The loss of the Villanis has sent shockwaves through their community, leaving family, friends, and neighbors grieving for their untimely deaths.
