Although Somers was known for her love of designer heels, Hamel felt that wearing Manolo Blahniks for her final trip would have been predictable and impersonal. He wanted something that would symbolize their shared adventures and the safety the boots provided on their hikes. On October 16th, the day Somers would have celebrated her 77th birthday, her family gathered to remember her extraordinary life. A private family burial took place that week, followed by a memorial at the Stone Eagle Club in Palm Desert, California, on November 30th. He read the last love letter he wrote to Suzanne, which brought tears to his eyes.
