Jewish man beaten and robbed in potential hate crime in Brooklyn, NYPD says

18:28 09.12.2023

In a shocking incident on the first day of Hanukkah, a Jewish man was viciously assaulted and robbed outside his home in Brooklyn, New York. The attack, which is being investigated as a potential hate crime, occurred around 7:35 p.m. in the Crown Heights neighborhood. The victim, identified as 40-year-old Joshua Merenfeld, was punched repeatedly in the head and had his cellphone stolen by a suspect who made an anti-Jewish statement. The attacker, described as having a thin build, was captured on surveillance footage wearing a black du-rag, a purple scarf, and a matching black jacket and pants with a multicolored design, along with brown boots.

Merenfeld recounted the horrifying ordeal, stating that he had stepped outside his home to have a cigarette when he was suddenly sucker-punched from behind. The assailant then pushed him to the ground and continued the assault by repeatedly kicking him while hurling anti-Semitic slurs. Merenfeld expressed his desire for the perpetrator to be apprehended, emphasizing the danger posed by such an individual.

This incident comes at a time of escalating anti-Semitic incidents nationwide, following the terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas in October. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has fueled hateful sentiments and acts of violence against Jewish individuals. In fact, earlier on the same day, a 28-year-old man was arrested for firing a shotgun into the air and shouting Free Palestine outside a synagogue in New York's capital. The suspect, Mufid Fawaz Alkhader, an Iraqi-born U.S. citizen, cited his emotional response to events in the Middle East as the motivation behind his actions.

The New York Police Department's Hate Crime Task Force has taken charge of the investigation into Thursday's assault, recognizing it as an anti-Jewish incident. Authorities are seeking the public's help in identifying the suspect and urge anyone with information to contact the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-8477.

Sadly, this incident is not an isolated event. The surge in anti-Semitic offenses since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict has been evident, particularly in New York City, home to the largest Jewish population in the country. According to the NYPD, hate crimes targeting Jewish individuals increased by over 160% in October compared to the same month in the previous year. Recent cases include the arrest of three teenagers for assaulting another teenager and two men in a string of anti-Semitic crimes in Brooklyn's Midwood neighborhood, as well as the arson attack on a Jewish-Japanese fusion restaurant in Williamsburg.

The rise in anti-Semitic incidents is deeply concerning and highlights the urgent need for community awareness, education, and a strong response from law enforcement. As the investigation into Thursday's assault continues, authorities are determined to bring the assailant to justice and send a clear message that hate crimes will not be tolerated.
