Trevor Lawrence defies injury, set to start against Browns

16:18 10.12.2023

In a display of resilience and determination, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence is set to start against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, just six days after suffering a high-ankle sprain during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Despite the severity of the injury, Lawrence's consecutive games played streak, which dates back to his high school days, remains unbroken.

The decision to allow Lawrence to continue playing was not made lightly. Jacksonville took precautions by signing Nathan Rourke from their practice squad as an extra quarterback for the week. If Lawrence had been unable to play, C.J. Beathard would have taken over as the starting quarterback.

This is not the first time Lawrence has played through injury this season. In mid-October, he suffered a left knee injury during a game against the Indianapolis Colts. However, just five days later, he was back on the field for a Thursday night matchup against the New Orleans Saints. Lawrence's physical and mental capabilities were deemed strong enough to handle the high-ankle sprain, despite it being a typically multi-week injury.

The importance of this game for Lawrence and the Jaguars cannot be overstated. With the team currently leading the AFC South, a win against the Browns would bring them one step closer to securing a second consecutive division title, a feat they haven't achieved in almost 25 years since 1998 and 1999.

The severity of Lawrence's high ankle sprain was evident during the game against the Bengals. In the fourth quarter, one of his offensive linemen inadvertently stepped on his ankle, causing Lawrence to experience excruciating pain. He had to be helped off the field by multiple trainers and was unable to walk on his own. Lawrence's frustration was palpable as he pounded the ground with his fists and helmet while the crowd looked on quietly.

Wearing a walking boot on Wednesday, Lawrence expressed gratitude that his injury was not as severe as initially feared. "I'm thankful it's not a worse injury than what I thought on the field," he stated, indicating his determination to return to the field as soon as possible.

Lawrence's impressive resilience and unwavering commitment to playing through injuries reflect his tough nature as a football player. Throughout his three-year NFL career, as well as his time in high school and college, he has never missed a game due to injury.

The upcoming game against the Browns will undoubtedly put Lawrence's toughness to the test. The Browns boast one of the NFL's best defenses, allowing the fewest yards per game in the league. Lawrence's ability to overcome his injury and lead his team to victory will not only be a testament to his strength but also a crucial factor in the Jaguars' pursuit of another division title.
