Pennsylvania Politicians Clash over Taylor Swift Era in Heated Debate

14:53 14.12.2023

In a Democrat-heavy vote of 103-100, Pennsylvania's House of Representatives passed a resolution recognizing the year 2023 as the "Taylor Swift Era" in honor of the global phenomenon's 34th birthday. Despite the majority, one Republican, Rep. Russ Diamond, criticized the resolution, calling it silly since Swift now resides in Tennessee. Diamond even quoted Swift's lyrics, stating, "She crossed the border, she turned around and she looked at us and said... we [are] never, ever, ever getting back together."

However, Democrat Maureen E. Madden praised Swift for using her fame to promote issues important to Democrats, such as women's rights and environmental conservation. Madden highlighted Swift's influence on young people, citing her recent call for fans to register to vote, which resulted in a surge of over 35,000 new voter registrations on Vote.org.

Despite living primarily in Tennessee, Swift's ties to Pennsylvania were emphasized. She spent her childhood in West Reading, Berks County, and even wrote a song called "Christmas Tree Farm" about growing up on an actual Christmas tree farm. Furthermore, Swift's iconic Eras Tour, which included three stops in Pennsylvania, became the first music tour to gross over $1 billion, boosting the local economy and hotel bookings.

The resolution recognized Swift as a "singular economic and cultural influence" who has transcended the role of a pop star. It praised her as a role model of courage, self-acceptance, and self-determination, persisting in the face of personal and professional obstacles. Swift's impact on Pennsylvania's tourism, economy, and political engagement, particularly among young women, was acknowledged.

Despite facing opposition, the resolution passed, solidifying 2023 as the "Taylor Swift Era" in Pennsylvania. Speaker Joanna McClinton playfully responded to the critics, quoting Swift's lyrics from "Shake It Off" - "haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate." This recognition adds to the string of accolades Swift has received, including being named Time magazine's Person of the Year and People magazine's Most Intriguing Person of the Year for 2023. Additionally, Forbes ranked her as the world's fifth most powerful woman.

Swift's influence extends beyond her music career. She has donated millions to hunger and disaster relief efforts nationwide and has become Spotify's most-streamed artist globally, with over 26 billion song streams. With her Eras Tour predicted to gross over $1 billion and her film version becoming the highest-grossing concert film ever, Swift's impact on the cultural and economic landscape is undeniable. As she celebrates her birthday with A-list pals in New York City, her boyfriend, Kansas City Chief tight end Travis Kelce, plans to throw her the "best party possible" over the weekend.
