Deaf girl's wish list reaches Santa with elf's sign language assistance

05:34 15.12.2023

In a heartwarming story, a young girl named Emily, who is deaf and communicates using British Sign Language (BSL), had her Christmas wish fulfilled with the help of Holly the Elf, one of Santa's helpers. Emily, aged four, along with her six-year-old brother Hugo, visited Santa ahead of the holiday season, where Holly the Elf made an unforgettable impression on the family.

The Andrews family, hailing from Goole, East Yorkshire, England, shared their touching experience with the world. As reported by SWNS, a British news service, Melanie Boyeson, also known as Holly the Elf, assisted Emily in communicating with Santa using BSL. A video recorded by their mother, Tanya Andrews, captured the heartwarming moment.

The outing took place at Airmyn Park Primary school, where the school's head teacher, Natalie Dodds, revealed that Holly the Elf was specifically hired to ensure a memorable experience for Emily Andrews. Dodds explained to SWNS that they connected with Holly the Elf through the power of Facebook, and she generously volunteered to visit their grotto and interpret for Emily.

Tanya Andrews expressed her amazement at the magical encounter, as she had previously taken her daughter to four different Santa meetings where they were promised a Santa who knew sign language but were disappointed each time. She described the experience of Emily being able to freely communicate her Christmas wishes to Santa as "amazing."

In the video, Emily can be seen confidently using sign language to ask for a doll, a doll carrier, earrings, and a ring. Tanya Andrews recounted that she was moved to tears after witnessing her daughter's face light up with joy. She shared that Emily was initially a little nervous, as she had never interacted with Santa before, but Holly the Elf's encouragement and support helped her overcome her hesitation.

It is estimated that around 466 million people worldwide have disabled hearing loss, with approximately 34 million of them being children, according to the World Health Organization and the National Deaf Children's Society, respectively. Tanya Andrews hopes that her daughter's dream come true will inspire others to create similar inclusive experiences for the deaf community. She aspires to break down barriers and ensure equal opportunities for her daughter, just as she does for her son.
