Bengals' Jake Browning Faces Steroid Test After Epic Comeback

03:49 17.12.2023

Cincinnati Bengals backup quarterback Jake Browning emerged as the hero of Saturday afternoon's game against the Minnesota Vikings, leading his team to a thrilling 27-24 comeback victory. Browning's impressive performance caught the attention of fans and the league alike, but it was a text message he received after the game that added an intriguing twist to the story.

Shortly after the Bengals' remarkable fourth-quarter rally, Browning took to his Instagram Story to share a screenshot of a text message that appeared to be from an NFL representative. The message, supposedly from someone named Joe, stated that Browning was due for a urine steroid test the following day. The timing of this notification was particularly interesting, as it came right after the Bengals had been down 17-3 going into the fourth quarter and their playoff hopes seemed to be slipping away.

According to USA Today, the NFL randomly tests ten players each week from the preseason to the playoffs, so it was likely Browning's turn to undergo testing. Nevertheless, the coincidence of receiving the test notification right after his outstanding performance raised eyebrows. Prior to the fourth quarter, Browning had struggled to make an impact filling in for injured star Joe Burrow. However, a quick turnaround saw him orchestrate three touchdown drives, including two passing touchdowns, to tie the game at 24-24 with only 39 seconds left on the clock.

In the ensuing overtime period, Browning connected with receiver Tyler Boyd on a crucial third-and-9 play, resulting in a 44-yard gain that set up kicker Evan McPherson for the game-winning field goal. The victory not only completed the Bengals' comeback but also propelled them to an 8-6 record, putting them back in the AFC playoff picture and securing the 6th spot in the conference standings.

Browning's personal stat line was equally impressive, as he finished the game with 29 completions on 42 attempts, 324 passing yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. His standout performance in the fourth quarter was pivotal in bringing the Bengals back into contention. In a postgame press conference, Browning revealed that being cut from the Vikings in 2021 had been one of the most devastating moments in his career. Signed as an undrafted free agent, Browning had spent time on the Vikings' practice squad in 2019 and 2020 before being released.

Since taking over for Burrow, Browning has showcased his talent, completing an impressive 75.9% of his passes as a starter. His success has drawn comparisons to Burrow himself, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. Despite going undrafted as a free agent, Browning has proved that he is anything but a backup quarterback.

Following Saturday's victory, Browning's Instagram story revealed that he had received a text message from an NFL employee notifying him of a urine test for performance-enhancing drugs. The timing of the message, sent just 15 minutes after the game ended, added an unexpected twist to his remarkable performance.

In his four starts, Browning has led the Bengals to a 3-1 record while completing an impressive 75.9% of his passes for 1,180 yards and six touchdowns. The win against the Vikings propelled the Bengals from the 10th seed to a more favorable position in the AFC playoff race. However, Browning's only loss as a starter came against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 12, and he now has the opportunity to seek revenge against them in their upcoming matchup.

The Steelers, who currently have a question mark at quarterback, dropped to a 7-7 record after a loss to the Indianapolis Colts, causing them to fall from the seventh seed to the 12th. A win for the Bengals in their next game is crucial to maintaining their playoff hopes, as a loss would allow the Steelers to leapfrog them in the standings.

Browning's outstanding performance against the Vikings further solidified his status as a rising star in the NFL. As the Bengals continue their push for a playoff berth, all eyes will be on Browning to see if he can maintain his impressive form and lead his team to further success.
