Prosecutors seek 10+ years for parents of Michigan school shooter

06:35 09.04.2024

The sentencing for Jennifer and James Crumbley, the parents of the teenager responsible for the Oxford High School shooting in 2021, is set to take place on Tuesday. The Crumbleys were convicted of involuntary manslaughter, making them the first parents in the country to be held criminally responsible for a school shooting. Prosecutors have recommended a minimum sentence of at least 10 years in prison for each parent, with the possibility of parole consideration after serving about 2 1/2 years in jail. The sentencing memos revealed that Jennifer Crumbley is seeking to avoid prison and instead be placed under house arrest with an electronic tether at her attorney's property, while James Crumbley is also hoping for a lenient sentence. Prosecutors argued that the proposed sentence is insufficient given the severity of the tragedy caused by the parents' gross negligence. The trials focused on the parents' failure to secure the gun used in the shooting, as well as their disregard for their son's mental health issues. During the trials, it was revealed that the parents did not take immediate action after their son displayed disturbing behavior at school, despite being advised to seek mental health treatment for him. The defense attorneys for the Crumbleys have argued that the charges have no legal justification, but appeals courts have upheld them. Ethan Crumbley, the shooter, was sentenced to life in prison without parole after pleading guilty to murder and terrorism charges. The sentencing next week represents the end of a dramatic saga that has pushed the boundaries of who is responsible for a mass shooting.
