Blue Jackets' Sean Kuraly collapses on ice, paramedics summoned in alarming incident

20:31 24.12.2023

Columbus Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly was released from the hospital after collapsing during a game against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday night. The incident occurred late in the first period when Kuraly was hit by Maple Leafs defenseman Jake McCabe. Initially, the hit appeared to be a routine hockey hit, but Kuraly immediately hunched over in pain and struggled to make it back to the bench.

The Bally Sports broadcast captured the alarming scene as trainers assisted Kuraly in walking back to the locker room through the tunnel. Play on the ice was stopped, and paramedics rushed onto the ice to attend to Kuraly. It was reported that he collapsed as he was being helped back to the locker room. The first period was suspended with just 18.3 seconds remaining, and the remaining time was added to the second period.

Despite the frightening nature of the incident, the Blue Jackets expressed optimism that Kuraly's injury was not serious. However, he was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Columbus coach Pascal Vincent commented after the game, stating that he had been informed that everything should be fine but emphasized the urgency of the situation. He expressed concern for Kuraly's well-being, saying, "It's not fun. You don't want to see that."

On Sunday, the Blue Jackets announced that all tests came back negative and Kuraly was released from the hospital. The team spokesperson stated that it appears Kuraly avoided any serious injury. The news brought relief to the team and fans, as the incident had caused significant distress. Toronto ultimately won the game with a score of 4-1.

Sean Kuraly, serving as the team's alternate captain, is currently in his third season with the Blue Jackets. Prior to the incident, he had recorded six goals and five assists. His teammates expressed their concern and relief after receiving news of his well-being. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson said, "You have no idea what's going on, but when somebody waves that towel, you hope they get to him quick. The first little bit [during intermission] was intense, but once we got that word [he was OK], you reset and you go out and play."

The incident highlights the inherent risks involved in contact sports like hockey. The team and fans alike are grateful that Kuraly's injuries were not severe and that he has been released from the hospital. The Columbus Blue Jackets will continue to monitor his condition and provide any necessary support during his recovery.
