State Capitols Cleared Amid Bomb Threats

13:44 03.01.2024

Multiple state capitol buildings across the country have been evacuated after officials received bomb threats via email to the offices of their secretaries of state. The threats, which were part of a mass chain email, stated that bombs had been placed in state capitols throughout the US, though the exact contents of the message have not been revealed by authorities.

In Kentucky, state legislators were evacuated from the Capitol building one day after the start of their legislative session. Governor Andy Beshear confirmed through a statement posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that everyone inside the building was safe. However, he noted that Kentucky State Police had ordered the evacuation of all individuals as a precautionary measure. Beshear also mentioned that similar threats had been made to other officers across the country.

Michigan, Connecticut, Georgia, and Mississippi also issued evacuations at their state capitol buildings on Wednesday morning in response to the bomb threats. However, it remains unclear how many state offices received the threats. Governor Beshear expressed gratitude towards the first responders for their quick response and assured the public that more updates would be provided.

While Kentucky and Mississippi lawmakers began their legislative sessions on Tuesday, January 2, Connecticut's state capitol in Hartford was briefly shut down for an inspection. Officials determined that the building was safe and subsequently reopened it. Fortunately, lawmakers were not in session at the time the threat was received. It is worth noting that the Connecticut Capitol is currently undergoing a $54 million renovation project.

The Greenwich Time reported that the state of Connecticut is collaborating with federal partners to investigate the bomb threats. Authorities are working diligently to ensure the safety and security of all state capitol buildings and their occupants. This is a developing story, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
