Ghislaine Maxwell breaks silence after Epstein files unsealed

13:21 04.01.2024

Convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell expressed frustration over being the only person facing consequences for Jeffrey Epstein's sex-trafficking ring, according to her attorney. Maxwell's lawyer, Arthur Aidala, stated that the crimes were predominantly about men abusing women, yet only a woman, Maxwell, has been imprisoned. Maxwell, 62, is currently serving a 20-year sentence for her involvement in recruiting and grooming underage girls for Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019. Although Maxwell believes others should be prosecuted for their ties to Epstein, she declined to comment on the release of sealed documents containing the names of 170 individuals associated with the financier.

The newly released court documents are part of a defamation lawsuit brought against Maxwell in 2015 by Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre. The documents, which were ordered to be unsealed by a Manhattan federal judge, have the potential to reveal explosive and incriminating details about Epstein's associates. Among the names listed in the documents are former President Bill Clinton, magician David Copperfield, physicist Stephen Hawking, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, and Prince Andrew, who has been previously sued by Giuffre for sexual misconduct. Notably, Giuffre claimed that Clinton "likes them young" in reference to girls.

Alan Dershowitz, Epstein's former attorney and friend who is also listed in the documents, defended the late sex offender's associates, stating that they were unaware of Epstein's secret private life. Epstein's brother, Mark Epstein, revealed that Jeffrey had information that could have potentially disrupted the 2016 election, stating that "if I said what I know about both candidates, they'd have to cancel the election."

The release of the documents is part of an ongoing legal battle, with Maxwell's attorneys stating that the disclosures have no bearing on her appeal. They emphasize that Maxwell's focus is on having her entire case dismissed and maintaining her innocence. The trove of documents, previously kept under seal, is expected to be gradually released throughout the next week.

The unsealed documents have sparked significant public interest, as they shed light on the extent of Epstein's network and the potential involvement of various prominent figures. However, it is important to note that being named in the documents does not necessarily imply guilt or involvement in criminal activity. Maxwell, who is currently incarcerated in a federal prison in Florida, continues to appeal her conviction and vehemently deny any involvement in Epstein's crimes.
