Bills Seek Snow Shovelers to Clear Stadium for Playoff Game

17:25 14.01.2024

In a remarkable display of teamwork and resilience, the Buffalo Bills called upon their dedicated fans to help clear snow from Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, ahead of their postponed wild-card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The game, originally scheduled for Sunday afternoon, was delayed until Monday at 4:30 p.m. due to treacherous weather conditions.

The National Weather Service had predicted up to 19 inches of snow for the area, and the video shared by the Bills on Saturday showed whiteout conditions inside the stadium. New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who announced the game's postponement, also implemented a full travel ban in Erie County. She shared a video on Sunday afternoon, giving viewers a glimpse of the area during what would have been kickoff time. "No visibility and dangerously high winds," Hochul wrote alongside the video, emphasizing the severity of the conditions.

Initially, the Buffalo Bills had asked for shovelers to come to the stadium, offering a pay rate of $20 an hour, free food, breaks in a warm area, and the opportunity to be part of the team to get the venue ready. However, due to the travel bans, the team later requested that people abide by the bans and not report to Highmark Stadium until further notice.

Meanwhile, crews in New York were tirelessly working to clear roads and restore power in the midst of the snowstorm. The Bills advised shovelers to dress warmly and bring their own shovels if possible, along with photo identification. Despite the challenging weather conditions, the team remained determined to ensure that the game could proceed as planned once the stadium was ready.

The Buffalo Bills were not the only team affected by the frigid conditions this weekend. The Kansas City Chiefs also faced the Miami Dolphins in what would become the fourth-coldest game in NFL history on Saturday night.

The decision to postpone the game came after discussions between Governor Hochul, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, emergency response teams, Bills leadership, and the NFL. With lake effect snow and strong winds causing blizzard conditions, travel was strongly discouraged unless absolutely necessary. A winter storm warning remained in effect for Buffalo and surrounding counties, including Orchard Park, until 7 a.m., with the potential for up to three feet of snow.

The Pittsburgh Steelers, scheduled to have a walkthrough in Pittsburgh at noon on Sunday, were set to fly to Buffalo at 3 p.m. The outcome of the game would determine whether the Bills would host the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs or if the Steelers would travel to Baltimore to face the top-seeded Ravens.

This is not the first time the Buffalo Bills have faced challenging weather conditions. In 2022, the team's stadium was buried under over 100,000 tons of snow during a major snowstorm in late December. The dedicated Buffalo community, along with the help of hired crews, worked tirelessly for three days to clear the stadium. The process involved plowing the snow from the field and manually shoveling the 75,000 seats, taking a total of 275 hours of shoveling.

The Bills' resilience in the face of extreme weather conditions is a testament to their unwavering dedication to the game and their fans. As they continue to battle the elements, their determination remains strong, and they are prepared to overcome any obstacles in their path.
