Escaped Philadelphia Teen Murder Suspect Shane Pryor Captured by US Marshals

01:38 29.01.2024

A 17-year-old murder suspect, Shane Pryor, who had escaped from a Philadelphia hospital on Wednesday, has been captured by the US Marshals Service Philadelphia, confirmed on Sunday. Pryor was taken into custody late Sunday afternoon after investigators saw him on surveillance video getting off a bus in an area of Philadelphia he was known to frequent. The authorities revealed that Pryor was uncuffed and with two prison staff members when he managed to exit a vehicle in the Emergency Room parking lot at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and escape around noon on Wednesday, January 24.

After reviewing surveillance footage, officials discovered that Pryor escaped the hospital driveway and went from building to building, walking right into public entrances and even speaking to people, asking them for a phone. He approached a front desk receptionist and asked for the use of a phone, but was told no. He then left that building, according to Fox29 Philadelphia.

On Friday, Philadelphia Police arrested an 18-year-old, Michael Diggs, who allegedly helped Pryor escape from custody. Diggs has been charged with several crimes, including Hindering Apprehension, Escape, and Criminal Conspiracy.

Pryor has been behind bars since he was charged with the murder of 54-year-old Tanya Harris in 2020 when he was just 14 years old. He is still awaiting trial in that case.

Pryor's capture took place at 3rd Street and Roosevelt Boulevard when he was seen boarding a Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority bus. The US Marshals Service and the Philadelphia Police Department were conducting surveillance in an area that Pryor was known to frequent when they spotted him. They were able to pull the bus over and arrest him without incident.

Pryor had escaped on Wednesday when he was being transported to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia for a hand injury. Deputy Police Commissioner Frank Vanore stated that Pryor was not handcuffed when he got out of the van, and it is unclear whether he broke free of them or if he never had them on.

Pryor is still awaiting trial on the murder charge from 2020. He is accused of fatally shooting a woman in the head in an alley when he was 14 years old. Defense attorney Paul DiMaio stated that Pryor has always maintained his innocence in the murder charges and may have been frustrated because his case was tried as an adult rather than in juvenile court.

Pryor's capture was made possible thanks to tips and information provided by the media and the public. The Philadelphia Police Department expressed their gratitude for the assistance. Further details regarding Pryor's capture were not available at the time of reporting.
