New York man sentenced to life for shooting woman in driveway mix-up

11:51 01.03.2024

A 66-year-old man, Kevin Monahan, was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison on Friday for the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis, who was mistakenly driven up his rural driveway in upstate New York last April. Monahan was convicted of second-degree murder, reckless endangerment, and tampering with physical evidence. The tragic incident occurred when Gillis and her friends, who were in a caravan of two cars and a motorcycle searching for another person's house, accidentally turned down Monahan's driveway in the town of Hebron. Monahan, claiming he felt threatened by the group of friends, came out of his home and fired two shots from his deck, with the second shot striking Gillis in the neck as she sat in the front passenger seat of an SUV driven by her boyfriend.

During the trial, Monahan testified that he believed his home was under siege by intruders and fired the shots to scare the group away, claiming the fatal shot was an accident involving a defective gun. However, prosecutors argued that Monahan was motivated by irrational rage toward trespassers. One of Monahan's neighbors testified that he had become increasingly upset with people making wrong turns into his driveway in recent years. Despite the defense's plea for leniency, Judge Adam Michelini emphasized the importance of holding Monahan accountable for his actions and ensuring he remains behind bars to prevent further harm.

Gillis' father, Andrew Gillis, described his daughter as a kind and talented individual with dreams of becoming a marine biologist or veterinarian. Her boyfriend, Blake Walsh, expressed his inability to forgive Monahan for taking the life of his beloved girlfriend. The tragic incident drew attention far beyond upstate New York, coming just days after the shooting of 16-year-old Ralph Yarl in Kansas City under similar circumstances.

Monahan's sentencing serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless actions and the importance of accountability in the justice system. The family and friends of Kaylin Gillis continue to mourn her loss and remember her as a bright and loving soul who was taken too soon.
