Viral videos of Tesla drivers wearing VR headsets while driving sparks alarm

19:21 07.02.2024

In a series of viral videos circulating on social media, drivers of Tesla vehicles are seen wearing Apple Vision Pro headsets while utilizing the Autopilot mode, raising concerns among federal transportation officials. The videos, which depict a seemingly dystopian and futuristic scene, have prompted warnings from authorities. However, questions arise as to whether these videos are genuine or simply part of a trend of individuals seeking attention and engagement on social media platforms.

Apple's Vision Pro headsets, released on February 2, boast a unique feature that merges digital apps with the user's surroundings, creating an immersive experience. Since their release, videos of people wearing the headsets in various unconventional settings have emerged online. Many of the videos taken inside cars appear staged, with clear indications that someone other than the driver is recording.

Despite the videos not being widespread, they have caught the attention of Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary, who took to social media to address the issue. Buttigieg emphasized that all advanced driver assistance systems, including Tesla's Autopilot, require the human driver to remain in control and fully engaged in the driving task at all times. He shared a video of a driver wearing a headset, seemingly operating a Tesla Cybertruck pickup.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also weighed in on the matter, stating that driving while wearing a virtual reality (V.R.) headset is reckless and disregards the safety of everyone on the road. The NHTSA's statement emphasized the need for drivers to prioritize safety and remain attentive while operating vehicles.

The viral video that prompted Buttigieg's response featured a Tesla driver using the Apple Vision Pro headset while seemingly allowing the Cybertruck to drive itself. The video gained over 24 million views on social media. It should be noted that Tesla's assisted driving features, including Autopilot, Enhanced Autopilot, and Full Self-Driving, do not indicate full autonomy. Tesla has faced scrutiny in the past, with the electric automaker recalling over 2 million vehicles due to a defective system intended to ensure driver attention while using Autopilot.

Apple, the creator of the Vision Pro headset, has not yet responded to requests for comment. However, the company explicitly advises against using the headset while driving in its user guide. Tesla has also not provided a comment on the matter.

The concern surrounding these videos stems from their potential to distract drivers and compromise road safety. Road safety associations have expressed alarm, emphasizing the importance of focusing on driving and avoiding distractions. David Reich, a spokesperson for the National Road Safety Foundation, stated that using the headsets while not in a self-driving car would be disastrous and a major distraction.

In addition to the controversy surrounding the videos, Tesla is also recalling approximately 2.2 million vehicles in the United States due to an issue with the font size on its instrument panel for the brake, park, and antilock brake system warning lights. This recall further highlights the need for attention to safety and thorough vehicle inspections.

As the debate continues regarding the authenticity and implications of these videos, it is clear that the combination of Tesla's Autopilot mode and Apple's Vision Pro headsets has raised concerns among transportation officials and safety advocates. The need for responsible and attentive driving remains paramount, with federal authorities urging drivers to prioritize safety and refrain from engaging in reckless behavior on the road.
