Ohtani's ex-interpreter ordered to seek gambling addiction treatment

07:39 13.04.2024

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's former longtime interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, appeared in federal court on Friday after being accused of stealing $16 million from Ohtani to cover gambling debts. Mizuhara, who exploited his relationship with Ohtani to plunder millions from the player's account, faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of bank fraud. The judge ordered Mizuhara to undergo gambling addiction treatment as a condition of his bond, which was set at $25,000. Mizuhara was released on bond and is not allowed to gamble, visit casinos, or associate with bookmakers. Ohtani expressed gratitude for the Department of Justice's investigation and said he wants to focus on baseball moving forward. The Dodgers have fired Mizuhara, and MLB has opened its own investigation into the matter. Ohtani, who was not implicated in the case, has been cooperating with investigators. The scandal has not affected Ohtani or the team, according to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts. Mizuhara's attorney stated that his client wishes to resolve the case quickly and take responsibility for his actions. Despite the allegations, there is no evidence that Ohtani was aware of Mizuhara's gambling activities. Ohtani recently tied the record for the most home runs by a Japan-born player in MLB. The investigation into Mizuhara's gambling scheme continues, with Mizuhara scheduled to appear in court again on May 9.
