Tennessee surgeon Dr. Benjamin Mauck was shot and killed by a patient during a targeted attack at Campbell Clinic Orthopedics in Collierville on Tuesday afternoon, according to local police. The suspect, identified as Larry Pickens, 29, had allegedly waited for several hours before executing the 43-year-old doctor inside an exam room. Collierville Police Chief Dale Lane described it as a one-on-one interaction, clarifying that Pickens did not attack other patients or employees present at the clinic. After the shooting, Pickens fled the scene but was apprehended and arrested by police five minutes later. Although he had a gun, he was not holding it at the time of the arrest. Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the slaying but Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Raumesh Akbari stated that the shooter had threatened a clinic employee in the prior week. Mauck, who specialized in elbow, hand, and wrist surgery, had recently been named one of the 2023 Top Doctors in Memphis. He received high ratings from patients and was well-respected in his field. The tragic incident has left the medical community and the clinic in shock and heartbreak. Campbell Clinic announced that all nine of its locations would be closed on Wednesday. The Collierville Police Department is investigating the incident and checking if Pickens has a criminal history with other agencies.
