'Rust' armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed faces sentencing for fatal shooting on film set

11:45 15.04.2024

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, the armorer on the set of the film Rust where Alec Baldwin accidentally shot and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, is set to be sentenced in a New Mexico state court today after being found guilty of involuntary manslaughter. The 27-year-old could face up to 18 months in prison and a fine of $5,000. Gutierrez-Reed was acquitted of tampering with evidence but has another pending felony charge for allegedly hiding a firearm in a bar. Prosecutors are seeking the maximum penalty, arguing that she showed no signs of remorse and was negligent in handling the weapons on set. Gutierrez-Reed's attorney plans to appeal the conviction, claiming that Baldwin was ultimately responsible for the tragedy. In recorded jail phone conversations, Gutierrez-Reed called the jurors idiots and "a-holes," expressed a desire for Baldwin to go to jail as well, and refused to testify at his upcoming trial. Despite her lack of remorse, she has requested Hutchins' widower and son to speak on her behalf at the sentencing. Defense attorney Jason Bowles plans to file a reply to the prosecutors' filing regarding the jail calls. The case has garnered significant attention due to the tragic incident on the Rust set and the subsequent legal proceedings involving Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin.
