Elon Musk announces Twitter's logo change to 'X'

19:53 24.07.2023

Twitter, the popular social media platform, has officially rebranded to X after its owner, Elon Musk, changed its iconic bird logo. The logo transformation was unveiled on Monday, with the bird logo being replaced by an "X." Musk had hinted at the change on Sunday when he posted a video of a flickering X and confirmed in a Twitter Spaces audio chat that the logo would indeed be changing. He stated, "We're cutting the Twitter logo off the building with blow torches." The new X branding was also showcased across Twitter's headquarters on Monday.

The rebranding of Twitter to X is just one of the many major shifts that have occurred since Musk's takeover of the company. In April, Musk changed the name of the company from Twitter Inc. to X Corp, reflecting his vision of creating an all-encompassing "super app" similar to China's WeChat. Musk has been vocal about his plans to turn Twitter into a larger platform, incorporating features such as audio, video, messaging, payments/banking, and more.

The shift to the X logo marks the end of one of the most recognizable brands of the social media boom. The blue Twitter bird had become an icon in its own right, and the company valued its logo as its most recognizable asset. However, Musk's vision for the future of Twitter and his desire to create a unique identity led to the decision to rebrand.

The origin of the new X logo is still unknown, but many online users have pointed out its similarity to the letter X in the Unicode standard of digital letters. Unicode is a nonprofit group that maintains the standard for digital letters and is also responsible for the creation of emojis.

In addition to the rebranding, Twitter also announced changes to its platform. The company stated that it would be limiting the number of daily direct messages unverified users can send in an effort to reduce spam. This change went into effect on Friday and encourages users to join the X platform for increased messaging capabilities.

The rebranding and platform changes come as Twitter faces competition from Meta's new app, Threads, which launched earlier this month. Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino expressed that the rebranding is just the beginning of a move to push the app in new directions. She envisions X as the future of unlimited interactivity, powered by AI, and connecting users globally in ways they can only begin to imagine.

Overall, the rebranding of Twitter to X symbolizes a significant shift in the company's identity and marks Elon Musk's ambitious plans for the platform's future. As Twitter transitions to X, users can expect to see new features and innovations that aim to revolutionize the way people connect, share, and engage on social media.
