Last Survivor of Pearl Harbor Attack Dies at 102

06:51 21.03.2024

Richard C. Dick Higgins, one of the few remaining survivors of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, passed away at the age of 102 on Tuesday at his home in Bend, Oregon. His granddaughter, Angela Norton, confirmed that he died of natural causes. Higgins, a radioman stationed at the Hawaii naval base during the attack on December 7, 1941, recounted his experience in a 2008 oral history interview, describing how he witnessed Japanese planes dropping bombs from his barracks' lanai. He vividly remembered the red circular emblem on the wings and fuselages of the enemy aircraft, known as "big red meatballs."

Higgins, born on a farm near Mangum, Oklahoma, in 1921, joined the Navy in 1939 and later worked as an aeronautics engineer for Northrop Corporation, contributing to projects like the B-2 Stealth Bomber. After a 60-year marriage to his wife, Winnie Ruth, who passed away in 2004, Higgins expressed his readiness to join her in the afterlife shortly before his own passing. His granddaughter reassured him that it was okay to go home and be reunited with his beloved wife.

Despite his humility, Higgins dedicated his later years to educating others, especially young people, about the events of Pearl Harbor and World War II. He emphasized the importance of remembering the sacrifices made by those who did not return from the war. Kathleen Farley, the California state chair of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors, noted that there are now only 22 survivors of the attack still living, with Higgins being a significant voice in preserving the memory of that fateful day.

Higgins is survived by two children, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Bend on Thursday, followed by a ceremony with full military honors. His body will then be flown to California for burial next to his wife. Higgins' legacy as a Pearl Harbor survivor and advocate for remembrance and education will continue to inspire future generations.
