Crane accidents rock Manhattan, leaving multiple injured

17:48 26.07.2023

In a dramatic turn of events, a crane collapse occurred in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning, causing chaos and leaving at least five people injured, including a firefighter. The incident unfolded on 10th Avenue between West 41st and West 42nd streets, as the top part of the crane suddenly collapsed, hitting a building across the street before swinging back and striking the building under construction. The entire episode was captured on video and promptly shared on social media, highlighting the terrifying nature of the incident.

According to emergency medical personnel from the FDNY, three individuals were transported to local hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, their injuries were reported to be minor, as confirmed by Mayor Eric Adams. The collapse occurred shortly after a fire broke out inside the engine of the crane, which was first reported at approximately 7:25 a.m. Deputy Commissioner Joseph Pfeifer of the FDNY revealed that as firefighters were en route to the scene, they heard the collapse unfold. The boom, top part of the crane, and a 16-ton load all contributed to the crash.

Despite the harrowing nature of the incident, Mayor Adams and Commissioner Pfeifer expressed relief that the consequences were not more severe. Adams stated, "The impacts of the collapse could have been much worse. We are extremely fortunate that we weren't during a busy time of the day." Pfeifer echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that the situation could have been far more disastrous.

Over 200 firefighters and emergency medical personnel swiftly descended upon the scene to provide assistance. The building under construction, intended to be a 54-story mixed-use building, now stands as a reminder of the potential dangers inherent in construction projects. Department of Buildings Commissioner James Oddo confirmed that a thorough review of the incident would be conducted.

As the day progressed, additional details emerged regarding the initial fire that sparked the crane collapse. The blaze erupted shortly before 7:30 a.m. atop the 50-story building that was still being constructed. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and drivers were urged to avoid the area due to road closures caused by the incident.

Videos and images shared on social media showcased the intense flames engulfing the crane's cabin, while debris rained down on the streets below. The incident forced the closure of several roads and caused significant traffic disruptions, leading to delays for morning commuters. The FDNY confirmed that four individuals, including a firefighter, sustained injuries during the incident. Fortunately, all injuries were deemed non-life-threatening.

The crane collapse occurred near the Hudson Yards complex, prompting a swift response from firefighters and rescue personnel. Authorities promptly blocked traffic in the surrounding streets and through the Lincoln Tunnel to New Jersey. The New York City Police Department issued a warning via social media, urging people to avoid the area.

As the situation unfolded, pedestrians on the sidewalk were seen fleeing for safety as fire trucks and emergency vehicles rushed to the scene. The street became a chaotic scene as the crane's boom, a 16-ton load of concrete, and debris from the neighboring building crashed down onto the pavement. The sight of smoke billowing and fire consuming the crane's cabin added an eerie and dangerous element to the already tense situation.

New Yorkers were alerted to expect smoke, traffic delays, and a significant presence of emergency personnel and vehicles in the area. The incident served as a stark reminder of the potential dangers inherent in construction sites and the importance of rigorous safety measures. As investigations into the cause of the fire and subsequent collapse continue, the city remains on high alert, with authorities urging residents to stay updated for any further developments.
