Prosecutors Decline to File Charges in Nex Benedict's Death

20:41 21.03.2024

The tragic death of 16-year-old nonbinary teenager Nex Benedict, who died by suicide following a fight at Owasso High School near Tulsa, Oklahoma, has sparked controversy after the district attorney declined to file charges in connection with the incident. Tulsa County District Attorney Stephen Kunzweiler stated that after reviewing the investigation conducted by the Owasso Police Department, he agreed that the fight was an instance of mutual combat and that the filing of juvenile charges was not warranted. The fight, which took place in a high school bathroom, involved two groups of students who had been antagonizing each other in the days leading up to the altercation. Nex, who identified as nonbinary and used they/them pronouns, was sent to the hospital following the fight and later died by suicide. The medical examiner's report revealed that Nex's death was due to the combined toxicity of two legal medications, and no evidence was found of internal injuries related to the fight. Despite visible superficial injuries consistent with the altercation, the medical examiner ruled that none of them caused or resulted in Nex's death. The tragedy has sparked rallies and vigils across the country, with advocates calling attention to the dangers and persecution faced by the LGBTQ+ community. President Biden issued a statement urging parents and schools to take reports of bullying seriously and to work towards ending discrimination and addressing the suicide crisis impacting nonbinary and transgender children.
