Bidens' Dog Attacks Secret Service Agents, White House Responds

19:14 26.07.2023

President Biden's German Shepherd, Commander, has been involved in multiple attacks on Secret Service personnel, according to federal documents released by the Department of Homeland Security. The conservative group Judicial Watch obtained the documents through a Freedom of Information Act request, which included Secret Service emails, text messages, and workers' compensation filings. The attacks occurred between October 2022 and January 2023, with ten incidents detailed in the documents.

In one incident on October 26, 2022, Commander charged at an unnamed Secret Service officer in the presence of First Lady Jill Biden. The officer expressed concern about the dog's aggressive behavior and predicted that an agent would be attacked or bitten. A week later, on November 3, Commander bit an officer twice and ran at them twice in the White House. The officer required treatment at the scene and was later taken to the hospital.

Another attack occurred on December 11, 2022, in the Kennedy Garden of the White House, where Commander bit a Secret Service agent twice on the forearm and thumb in the presence of President Biden. Although the agent received treatment, they were able to complete their shift. On December 23, 2022, an officer was bitten on the arm while the first family was returning from the tennis pavilion of the White House.

The most recent attack took place on January 2, 2023, at President Biden's home in Wilmington, Delaware. Commander bit a Secret Service officer on the lower right side of their back while they were speaking with a house guest at the front door. The officer did not require medical attention.

Commander was gifted to the Bidens in December 2021 following the death of their previous German Shepherd, Champ. The Bidens' other dog, Major, also had biting incidents in 2021 and was subsequently sent for training in Delaware. The White House has been working with the Secret Service and Executive Residence staff to establish additional leashing protocols and training for Commander. They have also designated specific areas for the dog to run and exercise.

Both the White House and the Secret Service acknowledged the incidents but did not provide further details. Elizabeth Alexander, a spokesperson for the first lady, expressed that the first family is working to improve the situation for everyone in the unique and often stressful environment of the White House. The Secret Service stated that they have navigated similar situations with past first-family pets and take the safety and well-being of their employees seriously. They work with all relevant entities to minimize adverse impacts in an environment that includes pets.
