Bear cools off in Southern California pool to escape heat

02:35 31.07.2023

In the midst of a scorching heatwave in California, humans aren't the only ones seeking relief from the extreme temperatures. Bears, too, are looking for ways to cool down, as evidenced by a recent incident in Burbank. The Burbank Police Department shared a Facebook post on Friday evening, showcasing a bear lounging in a pool at a residence in a hillside neighborhood. The bear's decision to take a dip in the pool was likely a result of the soaring temperatures, with Burbank reaching a high of 89 degrees that day, according to AccuWeather.

After enjoying its refreshing swim, the bear climbed over a fence and made its way to a nearby tree. The incident serves as a reminder of the heat advisory that is currently in effect in Burbank, as well as in many other cities, until Sunday night, as stated by the National Weather Service. This advisory highlights the importance of taking precautions to prevent bear interactions. The Burbank Police Department provided several tips, including refraining from feeding or approaching the animals, cleaning and storing grills, carrying bear spray, and securing food, garbage, and recycling.

The bear's escapade in the pool is not an isolated incident. In January, a large brown bear was spotted taking a swim in a pool at a home in nearby Monrovia, California, according to ABC News Los Angeles station. These encounters emphasize the need for residents to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings during the summer months.

As for the bear in Burbank, the police department's Facebook post garnered attention and amusement from the public. The short clip accompanying the post showed the bear sitting in the small in-ground pool, seemingly posing for the officers by grazing one paw on the pool deck. The officers joked about the bear "beating the heat in Burbank" and commented on the intense heatwave that has swept across the country, bringing triple-digit temperatures and increased bear activity in California.

Social media users also chimed in, with one commenter suggesting, "Get the bear a beer and leave him be," while another expressed concern about the bear visiting their own property. However, it's important to remember that encountering a bear can be dangerous and requires caution. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife advises individuals to not run if they come across a bear, but rather to face the animal, make noise, and try to appear as large as possible. In the event of an attack, it is crucial to take action and immediately contact 911 for assistance.

The bear's poolside adventure serves as a reminder of the impacts of extreme heat on both humans and wildlife. As relief from the scorching temperatures is anticipated, it is crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety and the well-being of the wildlife in their communities.
