Sports Radio Host Fired for Sexist 'Barbie' Comments Towards Female Reporter

18:35 31.07.2023

Sports radio host Michael Sorce, known as Dan Geronimo on air, has been fired by WBIG-FM following sexist remarks he made towards a female reporter at Washington Commanders training camp. Geronimo's derogatory comments were directed at Sharla McBride, a respected journalist covering the team's activities. As McBride walked past Geronimo and his co-host Crash Young, he shouted, "Hi, Barbie girl," and added, "I thought she was a cheerleader."

The offensive remarks made by Geronimo not only sparked outrage but were also seen as deeply sexist and misogynistic, prompting WBIG-FM's parent company, iHeartMedia, to take swift action. Earlier this year, iHeartMedia signed a three-year partnership with the Commanders, making this incident an even more significant blow to their newly established relationship. Following an internal review, Aaron Hyland, iHeartMedia's D.C. Region president, confirmed Geronimo's termination, emphasizing that such behavior contradicts the company's core values. Hyland stated, "We take matters of this nature very seriously."

The Washington Commanders, determined to address the issue promptly, immediately barred Geronimo and Young from training camp while conducting their own investigation into the incident. In addition, the team prohibited the station from airing a previously recorded interview with new owner Josh Harris to demonstrate their commitment to taking a stand against sexism and misogyny. It remains unclear whether Crash Young will face any reprimand for his involvement in the incident.

Sharla McBride, the target of Geronimo's offensive remarks, expressed her deep sense of insult and embarrassment. As a seasoned journalist with 17 years of experience, she shared that she had never encountered such blatant disrespect in her professional career. However, McBride commended the Commanders for their swift response and proactive handling of the matter.

The Washington Commanders have faced criticism in the past for fostering a culture of sexism and misogyny under former owner Dan Snyder. Nevertheless, since the ownership change led by Josh Harris, the team has been actively working to create a safe and respectful environment. A team spokesperson acknowledged the incident and emphasized their commitment to ensuring that everyone feels safe and respected in the workplace. They stated, "We have worked hard to ensure that everyone feels safe and respected in our workplace, and we took swift action when we learned that an employee of our partner, iHeart, made sexually disparaging remarks to and about a member of the media while she was broadcasting live from training camp yesterday."

As the fallout continues, Geronimo has chosen not to comment on the situation at this time, stating that he is consulting with his advisers regarding his options moving forward. Meanwhile, both the radio station and the Commanders are committed to addressing the issue comprehensively and taking any necessary actions.

This incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of promoting respect, empathy, and equal treatment for all individuals, regardless of gender, in the workplace. The repercussions of such offensive behavior have not only led to the termination of Geronimo's employment but have also highlighted the need for ongoing efforts to eradicate sexism and misogyny from the sports industry. The Commanders and iHeartMedia's response to this incident will undoubtedly shape their future relationship and set a precedent for fostering a more inclusive and respectful environment within the team and their media partnerships.
