Sports radio host fired for sexist 'Barbie' comments towards female reporter

03:39 31.07.2023

Sports radio host Michael Sorce, known as Dan Geronimo on air, has been fired by WBIG-FM following sexist remarks he made towards a female reporter at Washington Commanders training camp. Geronimo, while speaking with co-host Crash Young, shouted "Hi, Barbie girl" as the reporter, Sharla McBride, walked past him. In addition, he yelled, "I thought she was a cheerleader" at McBride. The comments made by Geronimo were deemed sexist and misogynistic, resulting in his termination from the radio station.

iHeartMedia, the parent company of WBIG-FM, recently signed a three-year partnership with the Commanders in 2022. After an internal review, iHeartMedia's D.C. Region president Aaron Hyland confirmed that Geronimo is no longer an employee of WBIG. He stated, "We take matters of this nature very seriously and this behavior does not align with our core values."

The Commanders took immediate action by barring Geronimo and Young from training camp while they investigated the incident. The team also prohibited the station from airing a previously recorded interview with new owner Josh Harris. It is unclear if Young faced any reprimand for his involvement. McBride expressed her feelings of insult and embarrassment, stating that she had never experienced such blatant disrespect in her 17 years as a professional journalist. She appreciated the Commanders' swift response in handling the matter.

The Commanders have been under scrutiny for a culture of sexism and misogyny under previous owner Dan Snyder. However, the team has been working to create a safe and respectful environment since the ownership change led by Josh Harris. A team spokesperson acknowledged the incident and said, "We have worked hard to ensure that everyone feels safe and respected in our workplace, and we took swift action when we learned that an employee of our partner iHeart made sexually disparaging remarks to and about a member of the media while she was broadcasting live from training camp yesterday."

Geronimo has chosen not to comment on the situation at this time, stating that he is consulting with his advisers regarding his options moving forward. The radio station and the Commanders will continue to address the issue and take appropriate action as needed. The incident highlights the importance of promoting respect, empathy, and equal treatment for all individuals, regardless of gender, in the workplace.
