Biden Heads West to Discuss Climate Change and Economic Policies

04:18 01.08.2023

In a bid to address the growing climate crisis and promote clean energy manufacturing, President Joe Biden will embark on a trip to Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah next week, where he will discuss the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and America's commitment to combating climate change. The White House announced on Monday that Biden's visit to the region comes at a time when soaring temperatures have made this summer one of the hottest months ever recorded.

The IRA, hailed as the most significant response to climate change in the country, aims to propel the clean energy sector to reduce U.S. greenhouse gas emissions significantly. With an allocation of approximately $375 billion over ten years, the act not only tackles climate change but also includes measures to make healthcare more affordable for older Americans and Medicare beneficiaries. It caps the cost of a month's supply of insulin at $35 and extends subsidies for healthcare insurance, benefiting approximately 13 million Americans.

Biden's visit comes on the heels of his recent announcement of new measures to protect workers in extreme heat, including improved weather forecasts and increased accessibility to drinking water. As members of his administration join him on the trail, they will highlight the successes of the landmark climate change and healthcare legislation, coinciding with its anniversary. These efforts aim to bolster support for Biden's potential reelection bid in 2024.

Joining Biden's administration officials on their travel blitz are Vice President Kamala Harris, Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. Each will visit various states to discuss different aspects of the administration's policies and investments. Harris and Raimondo will focus on broadband infrastructure investments in Wisconsin, while Vilsack will highlight wildfire defense grants in Oregon. Buttigieg plans to visit Illinois and Texas to discuss clean energy investments, and Cardona will head to Maryland to talk about career and technical education programs.

The funding for the IRA and other initiatives will be sourced from new taxes on large companies and an intensified enforcement effort by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) targeting wealthy individuals and entities. These measures will not only combat climate change but also help reduce the federal deficit.

As the Biden administration seeks to promote its economic progress and connect it to future job growth, the travel blitz and events surrounding the anniversaries of key legislation aim to engage the American public and garner support for the administration's initiatives. With the U.S. economy experiencing growth in the second quarter and a decline in headline inflation, the administration hopes to demonstrate the positive impact of its policies and pave the way for a successful reelection campaign in the coming years.
