Biden reverses Trump's decision, keeps Space Command HQ in Colorado

20:23 01.08.2023

In a significant decision, U.S. President Joe Biden has chosen to keep the headquarters of the U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs, according to the U.S. military. This move puts an end to the ongoing debate over the potential relocation of the headquarters to Alabama, a Republican stronghold.

The Pentagon has stated that Biden's decision will ensure the "peak readiness" of the command during a critical period. Experts have argued that keeping the base in Colorado Springs is the best option to avoid a lengthy transition period to Huntsville, Alabama, which was favored by former President Donald Trump. Huntsville, known as "Rocket City," has played a key role in the development of space rockets.

However, the decision to keep the headquarters in Colorado Springs will enable the command to effectively plan, execute, and integrate military space power into global operations, with the aim of deterring aggression and defending national interests, according to the Pentagon.

This announcement comes at a time when Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville from Alabama is blocking numerous U.S. military appointments in protest of the Pentagon's policy of reimbursing costs for service members seeking abortion services. Last week, President Biden criticized Tuberville for impeding the progression of many women and people of color into more senior roles, including historic nominations such as Air Force General CQ Brown, the first Black person to lead any branch of the armed services, and Navy Admiral Lisa Franchetti, who would become the first woman to command the service and join the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

President Biden's decision to retain the headquarters in Colorado reverses Trump's choice to move it to Alabama in his final days in office. Military officials had recommended keeping the command where it is to maintain readiness, rather than investing time and resources into establishing a new headquarters. The Defense Department was notified of Biden's decision on Monday.

The controversy surrounding the choice of Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama, as the permanent location for the command has persisted for years. Reviews conducted by the Defense Department inspector general and the Government Accountability Office found that the Air Force adhered to standard protocol when selecting the Alabama site. However, former President Trump claimed in August 2021 that he single-handedly made the decision to relocate the headquarters. Some observers connected the decision to move to Alabama with the strong support Trump received from his allies, including Republican Representative Mo Brooks, who spoke at a rally of Trump supporters near the White House on January 6, 2021.

In addition to the debate over the headquarters' location, Alabama Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville has been blocking military nominations as a way to protest the Pentagon's policy of covering the costs of service members' travel for reproductive health care, including abortions. There are currently over 270 general and flag officers awaiting final confirmation from the Senate. However, the decision to keep the headquarters in Colorado is reportedly based on military advice and not influenced by Tuberville's hold.

The Biden administration's decision to retain the headquarters in Colorado has garnered praise from members of Congress representing the state. Democratic Senator Michael Bennet stated that Colorado is the rightful home for the U.S. Space Command and that the state will continue to lead America in space for years to come.

This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing discussions surrounding the U.S. Space Command headquarters, highlighting the intersection of politics, military readiness, and diversity in leadership appointments within the armed services.
